Nano-porous GaN is an innovative nanostructure formed inside LEDs and is a natural vessel for storing quantum dots. Because of its strong internal light scattering effect, the effective path of light traveling inside nano-porous GaN can be greatly extended to boost the conversion efficiency and to increase the reliability of quantum dots. Using the NPQD™ technology, Saphlux has demonstrated Mini/Micro-LEDs with various sizes and colors, as well as RGB Micro-LED arrays. In 2020, Saphlux achieved low-cost 0406 NPQD Red Mini-LED with an optical purity of 97% and a power conversion efficiency of 20% for fine-pitch displays.
Dr. Chen Chen is the CEO and co-founder of Saphlux, Inc., a start-up company commercializing the next generation light sources including NPQD Mini/Micro-LEDs and semipolar GaN for display and lighting. Prior to founding Saphlux, Chen was an R&D engineer at Schlumberger where he developed the industry-first ONYX360 rolling cutter, a “revolutionary drilling technology” that is now widely used in oil and gas exploration. Dr. Chen Chen has won several major awards including World Oil Award, E&P Meritorious Award, and Fortune Brainstorm Tech Innovation Award. He has more than 20 Patents, and holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA from Yale SOM.
