Dr. David Childs, Director of Product Development at Vector Photonics, will present his Paper on the first speed measurement of a PCSEL (Photonic Crystal Surface Emitting Laser). It clearly demonstrates that the PCSEL’s speed matches the company’s device modelling. These results prove that the Vector Photonics PCSEL technology is capable of significantly higher speeds than equivalent VCSEL or EEL lasers. We can therefore conclude that a PCSEL, with a smaller area and optimised for speed, has the potential to be over two times faster than a VCSEL equivalent and three times faster than a DFB laser equivalent.
Dr. David Childs is co-inventor of the Vector Photonic’s proprietary, PCSEL technology. Dr. Childs is currently the leader of laser research at the University of Glasgow, in the Electronic and Nanoscale Engineering division of the James Watt School of Engineering. He will take up his role as Director of Product Development at Vector Photonics in April 2021. His broad industrial experience includes leading commercial laser development at Marconi Optical Components.
